Here is a resource for those who wish to learn more about bees and beekeeping. Both natural and conventional methods of beekeeping have been included so viewers have the widest selection of information from which to choose. I will try to provided a complete summary when I have time. For now, I hope you gain as much enjoyment wandering through this library as I did while creating it.
Happy watching~

This post is a video compilation of both conventional and natural beekeeping methods. It begins with the documentary, Silence of the Bees,
which covers the issues concerning “Colony Collapse Disorder”, followed
by other shorter reports on the subject. We then proceed to videos on
beekeeping in general. Of these videos, Dr. Keith Delaplane’s Honey Bees and Beekeeping is the most comprehensive video series covering conventional methods followed by John Lewis’ Assembling the Langstroth Bee Hive.
Ken Lansing has a couple videos covering different aspects of
beekeeping and preparations for making comb honey. There is an
interesting part in one video where he works with a hive that is about
ready to swarm. Dave’s Beekeeping for beginners is another nice short introduction. Tom Emde’s Beekeeping Basics and Jorge Gomez’ Principles of Beekeeping are both collections of short clips on various aspects of the subject.
Kirk Anderson’s Backwards Beekeepers TV videos provide an interesting and humorous introduction to the subject of natural beekeeping methods. Be sure to look at the recommended links section to find more detailed information. Mike Bush’s link is particularly informative. Throughout this post you will see beekeepers use either the traditional Langstroth bee hive (w/ wax foundation), the Top Bar bee hive where bees are allowed to draw out their own comb and decide on what natural cell size they want, or a combination of the two. Both Phil Chandler, Talon Vanhowten, and McCartney Taylor's videos cover Top Bar Hives. The section Articles and Links about Top Bar Hives provides more detailed information on the subject.

Silence of the Bees
“Silence of the Bees is the first in-depth look at the search to
uncover what is killing the honeybee. The filmmakers of Bees take
viewers around the world to the sites of fallen hives, to high-tech
labs, where scientists race to uncover clues, and even deep inside
honeybee colonies. Silence of the Bees is the story of a riveting,
ongoing investigation to save honeybees from dying out. The film goes
beyond the unsolved mystery to tell the story of the honeybee itself,
its invaluable impact on our diets and takes a look at what’s at stake
if honeybees disappear.”

Phil Chandler strips away all unnecessary complication and confusion, demonstrating that ‘modern’ beekeeping methods are largely to blame for the poor state of health in honeybee populations and that the commercialization of beekeeping marked the noticeable increase in disease and parasite problems honeybees have been trying to overcome ever since.” The Barefoot Beekeeper

This post originally began as Bill Mollison's Global Gardener video series. I have since added other examples of people farming and gardening in a wide variety of climates. Some examples have been added to show how permaculture design and forest gardening techniques can be used to grow healthy, organic food under the most extreme conditions. Feel free to ignore the global warming, peak oil, and environmentalistic undertones taken in these videos.
---------------------------------------
Global Gardener
"Bill Mollison is a practical visionary. For nearly two decades he has
traveled the globe spreading the word about permaculture, the method of
sustainable agriculture that he devised. Permaculture weaves together
microclimate, annual and perennial plants, animals, soils, water
management and human needs into intricately connected productive
communities. Mollison has proved that even in the most difficult
conditions permaculture empowers people to turn wastelands into food
forests. Global Gardener is a series of four half-hour programs on one tape. Each episode looks at examples in different bioregions:"

desolate piece of land. (hyper arid, 10 acres of almost dead flat
completely salted landscape, 400 meters below sea level, two kilometers
from the Dead Sea, with very little rainfall, and temperatures over 50
degrees in August)

ESTABLISHING A FOOD FOREST: The Permaculture Way Series
"Join Geoff Lawton on a Permaculture adventure as he demonstrates how
to grow a food forest from start to finish. Over 90 minutes of quality
information to get you on the right track in creating your own garden
of Eden.
We start with a 20 minute Permaculture Classroom as Geoff explains the patterns of a Food Forest and the essential principles of “time stacking” your garden with the right mix of support species that feed and protect your fledgling fruit trees into maturity. We then join Geoff in the field as he puts the theory into action, planting the seeds and watching the system grow.
We end up at Tagari Farm – established by Permaculture founding father, Bill Mollision – which was abandoned years ago, but planted according to Permaculture design principles. Would this Food Foest survive on its own? You’ll be surprised.
Elements covered in the DVD include: Forest Fundamentals,
Legumes, Chop and Drop, Pests, Fungi, Nursery, Kitchen gardens, Swales,
Hardwood, Mature systems, and much more ..."

3 Films: "Farming with Nature", "Aquaculture", "Terraces and Raised Beds - Sepp Holzer's Austrian permaculture films from Oko film.
Sepp Holzer narrates how he created a sustainable edible landscape on
his 45 hectare mountain farm, 1500 m above sea level in the coldest
region of Austria. Within the pinetree monocultures of Austria he has
built the largest functioning permaculture farm in Europe. He has
transformed marginal, erosion-prone mountain lands with poor, acidic
soils into stable rich soils with greater biodiversity and productivity.
Farming with Nature
- A Case Study of Successful Temperate Permaculture - An "overview of
Sepp and Veronica Holzer's long-term application of Permaculture Design
to terrace agriculture in a temperate climate."
Aquaculture
- The Synergy of Land and Water - "Here, we see in greater detail the
water management on the 45-hectare farm. It is explained through an
intensely personal journey from Sepp's first interest in pisciculture
at age seven and on later through the 40 years that he has boldly
transformed a total of 3 hectares of the hillside to produce 70
interlinked ponds and wetland areas. Sepp farms fish and, in the way of
all good animal husbandry, he observes and understands their behaviour,
their nutritional and habitat needs, and the natural order that exists
between predator fish (pike) and feeders (carp and trout). It's as
though he constructs guilds of fish since the variety of species, and
the colourful decoration from inclusion of Japanese carp, makes them
the equivalent of an underwater flower garden. He eats the fish and
also sells them to restaurants locally.
Fish farming is but one purpose from his water management. He generates power; uses collected water to extract and pump up drinking water; the water surfaces reflect the warmth of the sun, provide humidity and create microclimates; and water temperature is varied using large boulders as heat sinks or through water movement from deep or shallow ponds elsewhere. But there is more than function: each water element is carefully located in the landscape, is provided with a variety of niches and aquatic plants, and is fed and drained by restfully-noisy waterfalls and watersinks. Here is natural beauty and sensory charm, because Sepp knows that we need more than food to sustain us, and he shows us how in this video."
Terraces and Raised Beds - This film describes the destructive effects of pine tree monocoltures on the landscape and how Sepp uses terraces and raised vegetable beds to establish a biodiverse habitat and create microclimates.

Permaculture in Practice
"Permaculture (Permanent Agriculture) is the design of an ecologically
sound way of living in our households, gardens, communities and
businesses in co operation with Nature.
This video, whose aim is to inspire people to start their own
permaculture projects, shows how it is practised in four very different
settings: a Hampshire back garden belonging to the editors of
Permaculture Magazine, including fruit trees, vegetables, bees,
chickens and ducks; a community co op in Devon, which involves a café,
allotments and local composting scheme; a City Challenge project in
Bradford close to a housing estate with 10,000 residents, tackling the
problems of unemployment, environmental awareness and backyard food
growing; and a small farm in the Forest of Dean where innovative
marketing schemes ensure a close link between producer and consumer
including a vegetable box scheme, organic meat, and locally produced
charcoal."
